Journalist and lecturer SARAH OBERMULLER-BENNETT talks about the life and work of Jerome K Jerome.
Sarah was born and educated in London, studying History at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, and Journalism at City University at Postgraduate level. She moved to Devon in 2013, where she lectures, amongst other things, on Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie and 19th Century detective fiction.
Sarah’s talk - which will be given in costume – is about the Three Men in a Boat author, Jerome K Jerome. His comic masterpiece published in 1889, which consistently appears in the top 100 novels, is a humorous account of a two-week boating holiday on the Thames from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford and back to Kingston.
An ancient river. The journey upstream of some impressionable young men into a mysterious, challenging interior. An inevitable reckoning at the source. Finally, the terrible return to reality. Here, surely, is pre-Edwardian English fiction at its classic finest.
