Terry Waite CBE is a British Quaker, Anglican, humanitarian and author.

His latest book is called The Tales of Tommy Twitchnose written for 5-10 year olds. In conversation with Jane Corry, Terry will talk about the book but also about reading and writing in isolation and combatting loneliness.

His first book, Taken on Trust was written in his head during his imprisonment by Islamic militants in the 1980s. He is also the author of Out of the Silence: Memories, poems, reflections, Solitude: Memories, people, places and Travels with a Primate. His novel, The Voyage of the Golden Handshake was described by James Runcie as 'Completely barmy, eccentrically English and thoroughly entertaining'.

The Tales of Tommy Twitchnose

Meet Tommy Twitchnose, who lives with his wife and two children in a cosy little house under the floorboards in a converted barnhouse. Tommy and his family have a happy life, foraging for scraps of food and doing up their home with bits and pieces dropped by the humans who live above them. But then, one day, their peaceful life is rudely interrupted. A large family of town mice suddenly appears on their doorstep, led by a daring and determined mouse called Danny, who announces that they're moving in... The adventures that follow will charm, amuse and amaze all who read them - children and grown-ups alike!

In Conversation with Naomi Ishiguro

  • Sidmouth Literary Festival
  • ICS

Naomi Ishiguro's debut novel Common Ground was published on  25th March – Common Ground is a timely novel about friendship and solidarity. It tells a story of two friends from very different backgrounds growing up in noughties England, and explores the stresses and strains that prejudice, inequality, and the hostile environment place on those characters and their relationships. It’s a fantastic read from an exciting new voice in fiction with a sparkling career ahead of her.  She is based in London.

Naomi will be in conversation with Jane Corry followed by a Q&A from the audience.

Common Ground

Did you ever have a friend who made you see the world differently?

From the acclaimed author of the story collection Escape Routes comes a timely, bittersweet and beautifully observed coming of age story about a friendship that defines two lives, and about the value of loyalty in a divided world.

It’s a lonely life for Stan, at a new school that feels more ordeal than fresh start, and at home where he and his mother struggle to break the silence after his father’s death. When he encounters fearless, clever Charlie on the local common, all of that begins to change. Charlie’s curiosity is infectious, and it is Charlie who teaches Stan, for the first time, to stand on his own two feet.

But will their unit of two be strong enough to endure in a world that offers these boys such different prospects?

The pair part ways, until their paths cross once again, as adults at a London party. Now Stan is revelling in all that the city has to offer, while Charlie seems to have hit a brick wall. He needs Stan’s help, and above all his friendship, but is Stan really there for the man who once showed him the meaning of loyalty?

In Conversation with Sarah Moss

  • Sidmouth Literary Festival
  • ICS

Sarah Moss is an English writer and academic. She has published six novels, as well as a number of non-fiction works and academic texts. Her work has been nominated three times for the Wellcome Book Prize.

In conversation with Sylvia Jacob, Sarah will talk about her latest novel, Summerwater, followed by Q&A from the audience.

Summerwater

Summerwater is a devastating story told over twenty-four hours in the Scottish highlands, and a searing exploration of our capacity for both kinship and cruelty in these divided times.

On the longest day of the summer, twelve people sit cooped up with their families in a faded Scottish cabin park. The endless rain leaves them with little to do but watch the other residents.

A woman goes running up the Ben as if fleeing; a retired couple reminisce about neighbours long since moved on; a teenage boy braves the dark waters of the loch in his red kayak. Each person is wrapped in their own cares but increasingly alert to the makeshift community around them. One particular family, a mother and daughter without the right clothes or the right manners, starts to draw the attention of the others. Tensions rise and all watch on, unaware of the tragedy that lies ahead as night finally falls.

Longlisted for the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction 2021.

Harry the Hippotamus

Harry is a young hippopotamus with a big problem... he can't say the word ‘hippopotamus'! So when Harry should be a happy hippopotamus he's harassed and full of heartache instead. No matter how hard he tries he just cannot say the vital word. After running away from home in frustration he soon finds himself confronted by lots of other animals who cannot believe how silly he seems. At every turn, Harry's attempts to say ‘hippopotamus' fail spectacularly. All seems lost for Harry until he confronts his problem one final time... with surprising results.

His last book, Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, was a Sunday Times best-seller. His other seven critically acclaimed works of history include Nathaniel's Nutmeg, serialised by the BBC.
